I have recently noticed a few small cracks and chips on my auto glass. Usually, I just call up an auto glass technician and have it fixed by them. I have always done this because I feel that they will do the best job, and I am not really sure that there is any other way to fix it. Due to the economy at this moment though, I do not have quite as much extra cash laying around for such things. I know that it is not super expensive to have the chips professionally fixed, but I have heard of some people fixing it themselves by using some sort of kit you can find at any auto body store in your area. I was wondering what your thoughts on this are? Do you think it would be wise of me to try this type of kit or should I just try getting enough money together and have a professional fix it like I usually do? Thanks so much for all of your assistance.

Dear Chipped Glass,

Having chips or cracks in your glass can become a real hazard. Besides them possibly being in the way of you seeing properly out of your windshield, if they are hit again they will start to grow and possibly cause major issues with your auto glass. Having them fixed immediately and correctly is very important. Our skilled technicians have recently wondered the same thing as you are. Do those at home solutions really work just as good as a professional? Of course, the answer is no. Nothing will be better than having a skilled professional fix any auto glass problems you may have. Although, if there is no way you have the money for a professional, there are some solutions that work good enough.

We do not want to steer you towards any specific brands, but there are ways to figure out which may be the best for you. The best way to figure out what really works is by looking on the internet. Almost all products available today have people writing reviews and giving comments on the products that they have tried. You should read up on different ones available and see what others that have tried it think.

Most do it yourself kits involve you cleaning the surface properly and then squeezing some sort of resin into the chip or crack. You will then need to smooth it out and let it dry however the instructions tell you to. Yes, these things work for very small problems, but we do recommend that if it is any larger than a small pebble that you get it professionally done. This is really for your safety. A chip or crack can start to grow very quickly just from water and heat. If it is not fixed properly then this will continue to happen. If this does occur you may have to have your entire windshield replaced which can be quite costly.
